Great summary of the challenges a manufacturer can face when selling online. All of these challenges can be mitigated with a few smart decisions and finding the right partners. I find that the key item that each brand manager needs to decide first is how much they want to interact with their consumers. Deciding a hands one or a hands off approach can help to quickly dictate direction. Then the brand must set clear goals for how much commerce they expect to do in their first 12 months and first 24 months. The goals will color each choice they make from a cost, timing, and completeness perspective.

Excellent article that has answered a lot of questions, especially as I am involved in affiliate marketing and often fail to understand the reluctance of certain merchants to 'move with the times'!

Sally,

I've been just researching this topic and though there is now a tendency to say that manufacturers that venture to sale online will fail, I've been able to dig up some good examples of the reverse.

One big point I've encountered is real knowledge of what is needed and how to acquire it. Either the company thinks it's "no biggie" or they fear the costs will be overwhelming.

This has been a very helpful read thanks!

Thanks for the comments, you are absolutely right. There are many many manufacturers who have made a successful transition to selling online. I often find that the biggest mistake some companies make is assuming that e-commerce is easy. There are many strategic and tactical issues to consider, and it's important that they think things through, get the necessary education and go into the effort with eyes wide open. It can be a huge source of revenue and brand equity if done well!
