Rick Whittington

Great post - I'm glad I found your blog. About 40% of the work I do relates to e-commerce or e-commerce consulting, and many first-time retailers contact me with carts already in mind. Volusion must be doing a good job marketing their cart, because many of my prospects mention that cart. I agree that retailers need to assess the 10 things you mention above, or have a professional that's "been there, done that" assess it for them. Thank you for this great post.

Great post Sally!
I've been struggling with a proposal for an NPO that wants a shopping cart "before" the horse. It is difficult explaining to the association that significantly more resources are necessary to not only run the cart but market their endeavor as well. Your post is very helpful - again, thanks.

Hat tip to Rick for pointing out your post on twitter.

Greg and Rick,
Thanks to both of you for your comments and thanks Rick for the callout on Twitter. It sounds like those of us on the consulting side are seeing this happen freqently: a tendency to search for a technology solution before a clear business focus is established. In some ways I think that some of the "do it yourself" cart solutions that are offered on line have exacerbated this problem. Most of them don't offer consultative or business related services, nor do their websites offer much in terms of content or advice on how to run an e-commerce business. Unfortunately, some clients get in knee deep without realizing how complex and multi-facted e-commerce can be. It takes a lot more than signing up for a $99 a month cart to make a successful online store! Thanks again for joining the conversation.

We've been doing ecommerce for years and I still can't answer many of the questions above. Sometimes, it just makes sense to put what you've got out there and see who shows up to buy it.

Researching and carefully selecting the most proper shopping cart software for any business can be a daunting task. Like brick and mortars, you should have a plan for your ecommerce business before jumping into construction of the store. Talking to your ecommerce experienced developer and working with them closely throughout the whole process is key.

Rod Miles

Hey Sally, I definitely agree that choosing the right shopping cart software can be difficult if you're new to selling online. Working with an eCommerce consultant will save people from some of the headaches. Keep up the good work - all we can do is try to educate people about the process.

Exactly, Choosing right shopping cart software is difficult procedure but have lots of dependence to the business. It is the main thing or first thing which is involve to online merchandising.
